So i got on to making another billfold wallet using horsehide as an exterior, this time designed to hold lots of cards.

Features 1 bill compartment and 8 card slots in total. Measures approximately 9 cm x 11.5 cm

Once again the horsehide used is one rich in “character”, as some will call it. Naturally acquired scars and uneven tones on the leather create a an interesting, somewhat distressed texture, unique to that particular piece of leather.

Burnished edges to emphasize the formal and classic style of the wallet.

The leather has been treated with neatsfoot oil and beeswax, worked in by hand to condition and protect. As you might have noticed, the leather has a slightly  deeper color tone and has developed a mellow sheen as a result.

Spent the whole weekend working on this. Like the previous billfold, this is made from horsehide for the exterior shell and cowhide for the interiors.

The snap on the coin pouch is a tad off center (oops), hence making the flap a little asymmetrical looking

Horsehide is not widely available. Clean and blemish free ones are even less so as horsehide can only be obtained from horses which have died from natural causes. Hence most of the horsehide available are from old battle scarred horses which do not yield very clean leather.

The ones that I could get my hands on had its fair share of natural scars, blemishes and uneven tones, reflective of the horse’s course of life.  A section of the leather which had some interesting color textures due to its imperfections was chosen and cut out for this wallet shell.

A comparison with the wallet that ive been using heavily for the past 2-3 months

Leather used for the exterior shell is cut from the same hide.

The leather has darkened quite dramatically, turning into a color resembling mahogany – dark brown with reddish undertones.

The surface has also become very smooth and polished.
